Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy is an ever expanding series, with most of the games appearing on the PS/PS2/PS3, with a few branching onto other consoles. Obviously, X is the tenth game in the series, focusing mainly on Tidus and his journey to get back to where he came from. Along the way he meets Yuna, a summoner, who is trying to save Spira. Tidus eventually is drafted into helping her, as one of her Guardians; thus, the focus turns to defeating Spira's source of sorrow, Sin. X-2 is the sequel in which Yuna begins a journey looking for Tidus after seeing someone with a very similar face to him in a sphere.
Rikku and Yuna
Yuna is the lead heroine in both X and X-2. She's a summoner, following her fathers footsteps in an attempt to banish Sin. Rikku is an upbeat AlBhed girl, and despite how they reject Yevon's teachings, decides to become one of Yuna's guardians to protect her. As things turn out, they are actually cousins, as Yuna is half AlBhed - her mother was Rikku's father's sister.
To begin with, they have previously never met, but as the journey matures, their friendship too, becomes particularly strong. In my opinion, the start of X-2 relies very much on their friendship - as Paine is particularly silent, it's left to them to pull the player through the narrative, which they do.
As for the friendship itself, it's... really, well, to be blunt, like two close friends. Rikku would do anything for Yuna, even in the respect of giving up on a possible love interest for Yuna. Yuna herself, falls back onto Rikku a few times when she is unsure, and Rikku is the one who gives her support.
Why
I love the sisterly relationship between these two. It's so cute to see them messing about together and just being really good friends.
There in the Breakdown
I had a hard time thinking up a name for this. I eventually came up with 'There in the breakdown', generally because... one time, when Rikku is determined Yuna will not go to fight Sin, she kind of breaks, and Yuna is there for her. When Yuna herself breaks, countless times after that, Rikku is there for her too. Even as the world distorts, goes crazy, and everything goes out of control in a spiral of chaos, they are always there for each other.
